Kindergarten Time? Your Child Already Has What It Takes... but here are a few things to make the transition easier!

With your child

Talk about the expectations that a new school experience will bring. Have your child do things on his own. Dress himself, set the dinner table, even make his own sandwich. These steps towards independence are building his confidence and getting him ready to succeed in a group setting.

Playing games are a great way to practice important skills. Games can help teach your child to follow two step directions, wait and take turns, count, read, and understand that is okay to lose now and then.

With your school

Visit her future school and playground. Try and find a time for her to meet her teacher before school begins.

Communicate openly. Reach out early. Check in regularly. If you have a concern, bring it to the teacher in a clear calm way.

Look for volunteer opportunities. Volunteering is a great way to get to know the people and routines that will be a huge part of your child's life. Research shows "no matter their income or background, students with involved parents are more likely to have higher grades and test scores, attend school regularly, have better social skills, show improved behavior and adapt well to school."*

The Importance of Play

Did you know that play is so important that the American Academy of Pediatrics is suggesting that doctors write prescriptions for families to play together?* By playing with your child you are building his brain! Take his lead, explore, and enjoy spending a few minutes of undistracted time together. It can make all the difference.
