Parenting is the hardest job no one trained us for. There’s no manual, and no degree can truly prepare us for the task. Often, feeling unprepared leads to feeling isolated. That’s why finding good friends is so important—especially during this stage of life. Here are a few reasons why:
1. Connection
We all have a deep need to feel understood: to know someone else gets what we’re going through. This matters even more when we’re dealing with hard emotions that we wouldn’t share with just anyone.
2. Support
It feels good to know someone has our back emotionally and practically. We all need that friend who listens without judgment or the one who can help in a pinch, like picking up our kids when we have a flat tire.
3. Perspective
Sometimes we need a fresh way to see things. It’s great to have a friend who’s always in our corner, but it’s just as valuable to have someone who will speak the truth (even when it’s hard to hear) or help us view a challenge from a different angle.
4. Role Modeling
We want our children to have and be good friends. The best way to teach this is by showing it. When your child sees you support a friend, they learn how to do it too. If your daughter sees you turn off the TV because a friend needs to talk, she learns to prioritize relationships. When your son hears you stand up for a friend, he learns integrity.
So how do we build these friendships?
1. Be bold
Did you meet a parent at a meeting or event who made you laugh or seemed to share your values? Invite them for coffee! It’s the adult version of “Want to play with me?”
2. Be supportive
If you see another parent having a hard time, offer help. Even if you can’t do much, just letting them know they’re not alone can mean everything. (Remember the “connection” part?)
3. Be involved
It sounds simple, but groups are made of people. Go to a playgroup, get involved in a local faith community, or check out our Family Coalition! Some of the best friendships start when you least expect them.
